What makes these fairy cake mix cookies so magical though?
Probably all the sprinkles.
I would argue that the number one way to make a dessert prettier and a little more fantastic is by adding sprinkles. Even if that dessert is ugly…you add enough sprinkles, people are going to at least look at it and think “awe, well at least there’s sprinkles”.
It’s truly hard to go wrong with sprinkles.

What is Fairy Bread?
Just for funsies, let’s have a little crash course on the history of Fairy Bread before we morph it into this tasty cake mix cookie recipe.
According to trusty Wikipedia the original origins of the term Fairy bread isn’t known. However, the first known reference to the term was in 1929 when a newspaper reported on a party for child inmates at a consumptive sanitorium serving cakes and bread covered in “100s and 1000s” (or nonpariel sprinkles for you Americans).
So…that’s depressing.
(If you don’t know what a consumptive sanitorium is, it’s a long term hospital for long term (forever) patients. This one was probably for tuberculosis. Everyone dies there. Like I said, depressing).
HOWEVER! People had been putting sprinkles on white bread and butter for much longer than this so the actual treat of Fairy bread was not created in a tuberculosis ward, but the name was coined there. So I suppose the delight of all that magical bread will forever be known because of a depressingly horrible disease.

How to Make Real Fairy Bread
Take a slice of fresh white bread. Spread with butter. Cover with 100s and 1000s. Cut into triangles. Boom. Fairy bread.
Seems rather pointless to dedicate a whole post to the recipe, so I thought I’d slip it in here for you.

Materials for Fairy Bread Cake Mix Cookies
1 Box Yellow/White Boxed Cake Mix
Nonpareils Sprinkles (aka 100s and 1000s)
1/3 cup Oil
2 Eggs
2 tbsp (18g) All Purpose Flour
Important Tip!
If you live at higher elevations, you will want to add the extra 2 tablespoons of flour. Otherwise the the cookies will spread and be thinner than you anticipate.
Living in the Rocky Mountains, I’ve never lived below 5000 ft in elevation so for the longest time I could not figure out how people were getting their cake cookies to be thick and more puffy.
If you live at normal elevations you can still add the extra flour but it isn’t strictly necessary.
Another important flour tip!
I recommend using a digital kitchen scale to measure that flour. Flour is always best measured by weight because it compacts so much in measuring cups and spoons. If you accidentally add too much to the cookie dough, you’re going to end up with harder, sadder balls of cookies that don’t spread and definitely don’t stay soft.
If you need a scale, consider this one. Trust me when I say that it is the most handy tool in my kitchen and I use it everyday for much more than just baking!
